This was one of the last paintings I made in high school. My teacher said it was like a farewell which felt right although I don't feel too much more mature now. The figure is based off a photo my brother took of me at my uncle's housewarming around 12 years ago. The image showed I was once outgoing.
I really like this painting! I sort of just did whatever came to mind. It's heavily layered because a lot of what came to mind didn't work. That's evident in the textures and colors. I wanted to really capture how beautiful fabric can be. You can see progress in these crappy photos.

As sweet as the sentiment of a farewell to childhood is, this painting might be a "screw you" painting. Maybe? You know "screw you" paintings, like when Michelangelo painted Biagio de Cesena's junk being eaten by a snake. I don't think my thing is nearly as badass or direct. But in a way I'm really just saying "screw you" to two main-stream cultures that always seems to crash and I've just always been in the middle. However, that idea was put into my head by others after I had finished the painting. I think I just wanted to paint lil' Manasi as a god-like creature having a good time.
The text at the top should say "sun" in Tamil. At least that's what my Tamil friend told me. The hand symbol/mudra should also mean sun. |
